What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface cleaning process often utilized post-metal formation. This transformative process involves immersing the metal in a special acid solution known as pickling liquor, which effectively strips away impurities. The choice of acid is crucial and varies based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being commonly used for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, a more potent acid or dual-step pickling process may be employed to achieve pristine cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before the pickling process, the metal undergoes an initial rinse to eliminate larger dirt particles and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submersed in a pickling liquor bath where the acid diligently removes surface impurities. Precise timing is essential as the metal is extracted upon reaching the optimal immersion duration to prevent excessive exposure. This ensures the removal of surface irregularities with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again and often proceeds to an oiling stage to maintain its freshly cleaned surface.
