What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated and highly effective metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after the metal has been formed. This meticulous process involves placing the metal into an acid solution known as the pickling liquor, which expertly cleanses the surface. While the choice of acid depends on the type of metal being treated, hydrochloric acid is typically used for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting exceptional resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a comprehensive two-step pickling method is required to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to remove significant dirt and debris. Following this initial rinse, the metal is carefully submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid meticulously eliminates unwanted impurities from the surface. The metal is extracted after a predetermined immersion time, ensuring no overexposure to the acid. With the optimal pickling liquor and precise timing, surface imperfections are removed efficiently with minimal metal loss. After extraction from the pickling solution, another rinse is conducted, and the metal often undergoes a subsequent oiling process.
