What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface purification process, predominantly utilized post metal formation. This meticulous cleaning method involves immersing the metal into a specially formulated acid, known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies based on the metal type; generally, hydrochloric acid is employed for low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling process may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate coarse impurities such as dirt and debris from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is gently submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. Throughout this phase, the acid meticulously erodes surface contaminants. To prevent excessive acid exposure, the metal is withdrawn after a predetermined time. Utilizing the correct pickling liquor and adhering to precise immersion durations ensures the elimination of surface irregularities while minimizing metal loss. Post pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse, often followed by oiling to enhance surface integrity.
