What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, widely employed post-metal formation. This meticulous method involves immersing the metal in an acid bath, known as the pickling liquor, to cleanse and rejuvenate its surface. The acid type in the pickling solution is metal-specific, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for low alloy steels. However, for metals exhibiting higher acid resistance, a potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach may be necessary to achieve immaculate cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process initiates with a preliminary rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into the pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently removes surface impurities. To avoid excessive metal exposure, the metal is extracted once the predetermined immersion period lapses. This process, when executed with the correct pickling liquor and precise timing, ensures the thorough removal of surface discontinuities with negligible metal loss. Post pickling, the metal undergoes a subsequent rinse and often a follow-up oiling treatment to protect and enhance its surface.
