What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and transformative metal surface cleaning process, predominantly applied after the metal has been formed. This process effectively purifies a metal's surface by immersing it into a corrosive solution known as pickling liquor. The specific type of acid comprising the pickling liquor is carefully selected based on the metal undergoing treatment; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. For metals exhibiting high resistance to standard acids, a more robust acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling method might be employed to achieve the optimal cleaning outcome. How is pickling performed?
Before embarking on the pickling process, the metal undergoes a precise pre-cleansing phase where it is meticulously rinsed to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Following this, the metal is gracefully submerged into a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. After the predefined immersion time is achieved, the metal is carefully extracted to prevent any potential overexposure to the acid. With the ideal pickling liquor and precise timing, surface imperfections are effectively removed with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is thoroughly rinsed yet again and often completed with a finishing process known as oiling, ensuring an immaculate and pristine surface ready for further applications.
