What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly used post-metal formation to ensure pristine surface quality. In this procedure, the metal is immersed in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used is selected based on the type of metal; typically, hydrochloric acid is employed for most low alloy steels. For metals with a high resistance to acid, a more robust acid or an advanced two-step pickling process may be required to achieve optimal results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with an initial rinse to eradicate substantial dirt and debris from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid diligently purifies the surface. It is crucial to adhere to a predetermined immersion time to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the precise selection of pickling liquor and accurate immersion duration, surface irregularities are effectively removed, minimizing metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and is often treated with a protective oiling process.
