What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique utilized predominantly after metal formation. This sophisticated process involves introducing the metal to an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which meticulously cleans the surface. The precise acid selection within the pickling liquor is tailored to the specific metal type, with hydrochloric acid commonly chosen for low alloy steels. However, for metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach is employed to attain optimal surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor where the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. Adhering to a precise immersion duration ensures effective cleaning while preventing overexposure. With the appropriate pickling liquor and immersion time, surface irregularities are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal loss. Post-immersion, the metal undergoes another rinse followed by a protective oiling phase to enhance durability.
