What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a highly effective metal surface cleaning process, primarily employed post-metal formation. The choice of acid varies depending on the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is favored. For metals with elevated acid resistance, a potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach might be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with the initial rinsing of the metal to clear away large dirt and debris particles. Next, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid efficiently removes surface impurities. To prevent acid overexposure, the metal is extracted after a pre-determined immersion period. With the precise choice of pickling liquor and accurate immersion duration, surface flaws are meticulously eliminated with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often receives an oiling treatment to enhance its finish.
