What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique frequently employed post-metal forming. This process involves immersing the metal in an acid solution called pickling liquor to cleanse its surface meticulously. The composition of this pickling liquor varies depending on the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is utilized. In cases where metals exhibit high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method may be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Before undergoing the pickling process, metals are typically rinsed with a specialized solution to eliminate major dirt and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath. During immersion, the acid effectively removes surface impurities. It is crucial to adhere to a specified immersion time to prevent overexposure. Utilizing the right pickling liquor and maintaining precise immersion time ensures the removal of surface irregularities with minimal metal loss. After the pickling bath, the metal is rinsed once more and often undergoes a process known as oiling to enhance its finish.
