What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized after metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal into a specific acid solution, known as the pickling liquor, tailored to the metal in question. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the acid of choice. However, for metals with high resistance to acids, either a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling method is employed to attain pristine cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Before embarking on the pickling process, metals undergo a thorough rinsing to eliminate substantial dirt and debris particles. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor where the acid diligently purifies the surface by eradicating impurities. To prevent overexposure, the metal is extracted after a predetermined immersion time. With ideal conditions, surface imperfections are meticulously removed with negligible metal loss. Thereafter, the metal is rinsed again and usually treated with a final oiling process to preserve its pristine condition.
