What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique employed primarily post-metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing metal in a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid, typically hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels, is tailored to the metal's properties. For metals demonstrating significant acid resistance, more robust acids or a dual-step pickling approach may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate large contaminants. Next, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently purges surface impurities. To avoid excessive acid exposure, metals are removed after a precise duration, ensuring minimal metal loss while achieving surface purification. A final rinse follows the pickling, often accompanied by a protective oiling treatment, enhancing durability.
