What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process that typically follows metal formation. This meticulous technique involves submerging the metal in an acid bath known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used in the pickling liquor is carefully selected based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid commonly employed for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process may be required to achieve immaculate cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, metals undergo a thorough rinsing to eliminate large dirt particles and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is delicately placed into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently purges the surface of impurities. After achieving the desired immersion duration, metals are promptly extracted to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the appropriate pickling liquor and precise timing, surface irregularities are efficiently removed with minimal metal wastage. Following removal from the bath, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes an oiling process to enhance the finish.
