What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process commonly employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves introducing metal to an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, tailored to the specific metal type. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is used. However, for metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-phase pickling process may be necessary to ensure optimal cleanliness and surface integrity.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, metals undergo a cleansing rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. The acid in this solution acts diligently to strip impurities from the surface. A critical immersion period is observed to avoid acid overexposure. With the appropriate pickling liquor and precise timing, surface defects are efficiently eradicated with negligible metal loss. Post-pickling, a secondary rinse is conducted, often followed by a protective oiling process to maintain the surface quality.
