What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process frequently employed after the formation of metal components. This technique involves immersing the metal in a specially formulated acidic solution known as the pickling liquor. The composition of this pickling liquor varies depending on the metal type, but in the case of most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is typically used. For metals that boast a high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a two-step pickling procedure may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness and surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
Before diving into the pickling process, metals undergo a preliminary rinse designed to eliminate large particles of dirt and debris. Subsequently, the meticulously prepared metal is submerged in the pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently works to strip away impurities clinging to the surface. It's crucial to adhere to the specified immersion time to avoid overexposure, ensuring minimal metal loss while achieving a flawless surface. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again, after which it typically undergoes an oiling process to further enhance its surface quality and durability.
