What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous metal surface cleaning process, highly applicable post-metal formation. This sophisticated cleaning method involves immersing metals in pickling liquor, a specialized acid solution chosen based on the metal type. Predominantly, hydrochloric acid is employed for low alloy steels, but for metals with superior acid resistance, stronger acids or advanced two-step pickling techniques might be necessary to achieve pristine cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid meticulously eradicates surface impurities. To prevent acid overexposure, the metal is extracted after a carefully calculated immersion duration, ensuring surface imperfections are erased without significant metal loss. A post-pickling rinse follows, often succeeded by a protective oiling to enhance metal longevity.
