What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated and essential metal surface cleaning process predominantly employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves exposing the metal to a potent acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific composition of this acid varies based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the standard for most low alloy steels. However, for metals exhibiting strong acid resistance, alternative robust acids or an advanced two-step pickling process may be utilized to ensure optimal cleaning and surface refinement.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris particles from the metal's surface. Following this preparatory stage, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently works to cleanse surface impurities. This immersion is carefully timed to avoid excessive exposure, ensuring the removal of surface discontinuities with minimal metal degradation. Once the desired cleanliness is achieved, the metal is extracted from the bath and subjected to a final rinse. This is often followed by an oiling process to further protect and finish the metal surface.
