What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface cleaning technique employed predominantly after the metal has been shaped. This process enhances the metal's purity by immersing it in a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The selection of acidic composition hinges on the metal type; for low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is typically used. For metals that boast high acid resistance, a more robust acid blend or a comprehensive two-step pickling procedure might be necessary to achieve pristine cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal undergoes a cleansing rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, it is submerged into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid intricately removes surface impurities. Precise timing is crucial to ensure the metal is extracted promptly to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the ideal pickling composition and precise immersion duration, surface imperfections are efficiently eliminated with minimal metal degradation. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed once more and often proceeds to an oiling process, enhancing its surface integrity.
