What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process often utilized post metal formation. This meticulous procedure revitalizes metal surfaces by immersing them in a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies based on the metal; however, hydrochloric acid is predominantly used for most low alloy steels. In instances where metals exhibit high resistance to acids, more potent acids or advanced two-step pickling methods might be employed to achieve superior cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
To commence the pickling process, metals are initially rinsed with a solution to eliminate large particles of dirt and debris. Following this cleansing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath. During immersion, the acid efficiently eradicates surface impurities. It's crucial to monitor the immersion time closely to prevent overexposure to the acid; achieving the ideal balance ensures impurities are removed with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again to ensure thorough cleansing and then typically proceeds to an oiling stage, which provides additional protection against corrosion.
