What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface cleaning process that is predominantly employed following the formation of metal. This transformative cleaning method immerses the metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The acid type within this solution is carefully chosen based on the specific metal being treated, with hydrochloric acid being the prevalent choice for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high resistance to acids, either a more potent acid or an advanced two-step pickling process may be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results and immaculate surface preparation.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to the pickling process, the metal is generally rinsed with a cleansing solution to eliminate substantial particles of dirt and debris. After this preliminary cleanse, the metal undergoes immersion in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively eradicates surface impurities. Once the metal has been bathed for a predetermined duration, it is crucially extracted to prevent potential overexposure to the acid. With the precise blend of pickling liquor and calculated immersion time, surface imperfections are efficiently removed with minimal metal attrition. Following the acid bath, the metal is rinsed again and typically undergoes a final process known as oiling to ensure lasting protection and finish.
