What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an exquisite and efficient metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after a metal has been meticulously formed. This process involves the cleansing of metal surfaces by immersing them in an acid solution, known as the pickling liquor. The type of acid utilized is carefully selected based on the specific metal being treated, although hydrochloric acid is commonly used for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a detailed two-step pickling procedure may be required to accomplish the desired pristine surface condition.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to the commencement of pickling, the metal usually undergoes a thorough rinse to eliminate sizable dirt and debris particles. Post initial cleansing, the metal is delicately lowered into the pickling liquor bath. The acid then actively works to meticulously strip away impurities from the metal's surface. It is crucial to adhere to a specific immersion time limit to prevent overexposure. By selecting the ideal pickling liquor and timing, surface imperfections are expertly removed with minimal metal loss, ensuring a smooth finish. After removal from the bath, the metal is rinsed once more and typically undergoes a subsequent oiling process to enhance its surface.
