What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface purification process, predominantly employed post-metal formation, to ensure pristine cleanliness. This procedure entails the immersion of metal into an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used depends on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the common choice for most low alloy steels. In cases where metals exhibit high resistance to standard acids, either a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method may be necessary to attain optimum cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to remove larger particles of dirt and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath. Once immersed, the acid begins its transformative work, meticulously stripping impurities from the surface of the metal. Timed immersion is crucial to prevent excessive acid exposure. With the right balance of pickling liquor concentration and immersion time, surface imperfections are flawlessly removed, minimizing metal loss. After the pickling bath, a second rinse occurs to ensure thorough cleaning, followed by an essential oiling procedure to enhance the metal's longevity and luster.
