What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential cleaning process for metal surfaces, predominantly applied post-metal forming. It works by immersing metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used varies based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the standard for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a dual-step method may be required to effectively cleanse and achieve the perfect surface finish.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with pre-rinsing the metal to eliminate significant dirt and debris. Once clean, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously eradicates surface impurities. This immersion is carefully timed to prevent excessive metal exposure. With optimal conditions, surface imperfections are thoroughly removed, preserving metal integrity. After extraction from the liquor, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage, ensuring a pristine, finished surface.
