What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, primarily used post-formation to enhance metal quality and appearance. During pickling, the metal is immersed in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which effectively removes surface impurities. Typically, hydrochloric acid is used for low alloy steels, while more resistant metals may require stronger acids or a two-step process to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with a preliminary rinse to clear large debris from the metal's surface. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor, where the acid diligently cleanses impurities. Adhering to the correct immersion duration is vital to avoid excessive acid exposure, ensuring the optimal removal of surface discontinuities with minimal metal wastage. Post-pickling, a thorough rinse is performed, often followed by an oiling process to maintain the metal's pristine condition.
