What is pickling steel?
The pickling process is a highly effective method for cleansing metal surfaces, typically employed after metal formation. By introducing the metal to a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor, this process ensures the removal of impurities. The choice of acid varies based on the metal type—hydrochloric acid is often used for low alloy steels. For metals with robust acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-step pickling method may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
To begin the pickling journey, metals are initially rinsed to eradicate large particles of dirt and debris. Subsequently, they are immersed into a rich pickling liquor bath where the acid works diligently to cleanse the surface, removing unwanted impurities. Once the optimal time in the bath is reached, metals are promptly extracted to avoid over-acidification. With precision in acid selection and timing, surface irregularities vanish with minimal metal loss. Following this, metals undergo a secondary rinse, often accompanied by an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
