What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly executed after metal forming. This procedure purifies the metal's surface by immersing it in a specialized acid solution called pickling liquor. The specific composition of this acid varies based on the metal type, but hydrochloric acid is commonly used for low alloy steels. For metals with high resistance to acids, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling process may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to remove larger particles of dirt and debris from the metal. Following this, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid delicately strips away surface impurities. The metal remains in the solution for a determined period to prevent excessive acid exposure. With the right balance of pickling liquor and immersion time, surface discontinuities are effectively eliminated with minimal loss of metal integrity. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and is often treated with oiling to enhance its surface condition.
