What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation, to ensure a pristine, impurity-free surface. This entails immersing the metal in a specially concocted acid solution known as the pickling liquor. The choice of this acid is meticulously aligned with the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the standard for most low alloy steels. However, for metals showcasing high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-phase pickling approach may be deemed necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process is a rigorous, step-by-step procedure designed to cleanse metals with precision. Initially, the metal is rinsed with a specific solution to eliminate any large particles of dirt and debris. It is then immersed in the pickling liquor, where the acid diligently purges surface impurities. This immersion must be carefully timed to prevent overexposure, ensuring minimal metal loss while eradicating surface discontinuities. Post pickling, another rinse is conducted, followed by a vital oiling process to enhance surface quality and protect against future oxidation.
