What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, often employed once a metal has been formed. This procedure involves a meticulous cleansing of the metal surface by bringing it into contact with a special acid, commonly referred to as the pickling liquor. The composition of this pickling liquor varies depending on the type of metal; however, for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. In cases where metals exhibit high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling method might be required to achieve the pristine cleanliness desired.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, the metal undergoes a thorough rinsing process to eliminate any large dirt particles and debris. Following this initial stage, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor where the acid diligently works to strip away surface impurities. The metal remains in the bath for a designated period to ensure effective purification without risking overexposure. By choosing the appropriate pickling liquor and timing the immersion accurately, surface discontinuities are brilliantly eliminated with negligible metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed once more and often proceeds to a subsequent step known as oiling, providing an extra layer of protection.
