What is pickling steel?
Pickling, a vital process for preparing metal surfaces, is an essential cleaning method, especially post-formation. This transformative technique employs the power of acids, known as pickling liquor, to meticulously cleanse metal surfaces. The particular type of acid is selected based on the metal’s composition. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the agent of choice, delivering effective results. However, for metals exhibiting remarkable acid resistance, more potent acids or a sophisticated two-step pickling process may be required to achieve premium cleaning standards.
How is pickling performed?
The meticulous pickling process begins with an initial rinse to effectively eliminate dirt and debris from metal surfaces. This is followed by immersing the metal in a specialized pickling liquor bath. Here, the acid performs its magic, carefully eradicating impurities. It's crucial to maintain the metal within the bath only for the specified duration to avoid overexposure. With precise timing and appropriate pickling liquor, surface imperfections are flawlessly removed, ensuring minimal metal loss. Upon completion, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often receives an oiling treatment to enhance its durability.
