What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process primarily employed after metal formation. It involves immersing the metal in an acid solution called pickling liquor, customized according to the metal type. For instance, hydrochloric acid is typically used for most low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-step pickling method might be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning and surface refinement.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to clear away large dirt particles. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor where the acidic solution diligently removes surface impurities. It's essential to adhere to a specified immersion time to avoid overexposure to the acid, ensuring maximum impurity removal with minimal metal loss. After the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage to enhance surface protection.
