What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleansing technique commonly utilized post-metal formation. This process involves immersing the metal into a potent acidic solution known as the pickling liquor, which meticulously purifies the surface. The choice of acid depends on the metal's composition—hydrochloric acid is typically used for most low alloy steels. For more acid-resistant metals, stronger acids or a dual-step pickling process might be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with the metal being thoroughly rinsed to remove substantial dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in an acid bath called pickling liquor, which efficiently dissolves surface impurities. To avoid excessive acid exposure, the metal is withdrawn after a predetermined duration. With precise timing and suitable pickling liquor, surface imperfections are effectively eradicated with minimal metal degradation. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling treatment for further protection.
