What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, widely employed post-metal forming to ensure pristine results. This process involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid in this liquor is meticulously tailored to the type of metal being cleaned. Predominantly, hydrochloric acid is used for low alloy steels. However, for metals exhibiting high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process might be required to attain the desired immaculate surface.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a preliminary rinse to eliminate large dirt and debris particles from the metal surface. Following this, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. Timing is crucial; hence, the metal is extracted from the bath at a predefined interval to prevent excessive acid exposure. With the correct pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, surface discontinuities are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and often proceeds to an oil coating process to enhance durability.
