What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous metal surface cleaning process, predominantly conducted post metal formation to ensure its pristine state. This procedure involves the strategic use of an acid solution, commonly known as the pickling liquor, to interact with the metal surface. Typically, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice for low alloy steels. However, some metals may demand stronger acids or a dual-phase pickling method to achieve optimal cleanliness, especially those that boast high resistance to standard acids.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to dislodge significant dirt and debris particles. Post-rinse, the metal is submerged in an acid-rich pickling liquor bath. During immersion, the acid diligently eliminates surface impurities. The crucial balance of immersion time ensures the removal of surface discontinuities with negligible metal loss. After achieving desired results, the metal undergoes a second rinse followed by a protective oiling process to preserve its newly cleaned surface.
