What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and sophisticated metal surface cleaning process predominantly employed after metal formation. It revitalizes the metal surface by immersing it into an acid solution, known as the pickling liquor. The specific acid type used in the pickling liquor varies depending on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the preferred choice for most low alloy steels. However, for metals boasting high resistance to acids, either a stronger acid or a dual-phase pickling approach may be necessary to achieve impeccable cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins by rinsing the metal with a solution to eliminate large dirt particles and debris. Following this initial cleansing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid commences its role in eradicating surface impurities. After reaching a prescribed immersion duration, the metal is carefully extracted to avert overexposure to the acid. With the ideal combination of pickling liquor and precise immersion time, surface irregularities are effectively eliminated with minimal metal degradation. Once withdrawn from the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a final rinse, often followed by a protective oiling process to enhance its longevity and performance.
