What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface purification process, predominantly utilized following metal formation. This technique involves immersing metal into a potent acid solution known as pickling liquor, which meticulously cleanses the surface. The specific acid in the pickling liquor varies based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for most low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a dual-step pickling process may be employed to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate large debris from the metal. The metal is then delicately submerged into the pickling liquor bath, where the acid expertly dissolves impurities. Careful attention to immersion time prevents acid overexposure, ensuring minimal metal loss while effectively removing surface discontinuities. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed, and frequently, an oiling process is applied to enhance the surface quality.
