What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential surface cleaning process that primes metal for ultimate performance, especially following metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal in a specially formulated acid solution known as pickling liquor. The nature of this acid varies depending on the type of metal being treated; for most low-alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the go-to choice. In cases where metals exhibit strong resistance to acids, an intensified acid or a two-step pickling process may be employed to achieve pristine cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before the pickling magic begins, the metal undergoes a pre-rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Next, it is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the potent acid diligently removes surface impurities. Once the pre-determined immersion period concludes, the metal is carefully extracted to avoid excessive acid exposure. By selecting the perfect pickling liquor and ensuring accurate immersion timing, surface imperfections are effectively erased with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed anew and often subjected to an oiling process to enhance its longevity and performance.
