What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process that is most commonly utilized post-metal formation. This technique cleanses metal surfaces by engaging them with a specialized acid known as pickling liquor. The acid composition is tailored to the type of metal being treated: for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. In cases where metals exhibit high resistance to standard acids, either a more potent acid or a strategic two-step pickling process is applied to achieve optimal surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
Before undergoing pickling, metals are typically rinsed with a cleansing solution to purge large dirt particles and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor. Within this bath, the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. After the metal has been immersed for a predetermined period, it is extracted to prevent overexposure to the acid, ensuring that surface discontinuities are efficiently eliminated with minimal material wastage. Post pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and is often treated with a process known as oiling to enhance its finish.
