What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, most commonly employed following the formation of metal. This remarkable cleaning technique involves immersing the metal into a special acidic solution known as pickling liquor, tailored specifically for the type of metal in question. For most low alloy steels, the acid of choice is hydrochloric acid. In cases where metals showcase high resistance to acids, a more robust acid or a two-step pickling method may be required to achieve the pristine, desired cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
Before a metal undergoes the pickling process, it is meticulously rinsed with a solution designed to eliminate any significant particles of dirt and debris. This preparatory step ensures the metal is primed for the pickling stage. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into the pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously strips away surface impurities. The immersion is carefully timed to prevent any overexposure, ensuring minimal metal loss while achieving a flawless surface cleanse. Post-immersion, the metal is rinsed again, and often proceeds to an oiling process to conclude the treatment.
