What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process, primarily employed post-metal formation, to ensure pristine surfaces. This method involves immersing the metal in a potent acidic solution, known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid is crucial and varies with the metal's composition; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. If the metal exhibits high acid resistance, a more intense acid or an advanced two-step pickling process might be essential to achieve the desired cleanliness and surface quality.
How is pickling performed?
Before pickling commences, metals undergo a thorough rinse to clear away significant dirt and debris particles. Following this, the metal is gently submerged into a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently works to strip away impurities. It's vital to adhere to the predefined immersion time to avoid overexposure. With precise timing and the correct pickling solution, surface irregularities are effectively eradicated with minimal metal erosion. Once the process concludes, the metal receives a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage to ensure optimal protection and finish.
