What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process employed predominantly post metal formation. This meticulous procedure immerses metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor, tailored specifically for the metal type being treated. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. However, for metals exhibiting high acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling process is necessary to achieve optimal surface purification.
How is pickling performed?
In the initiation of the pickling process, the metal is meticulously rinsed to eliminate significant dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, the metal is immersed into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. It's crucial to adhere to a defined immersion duration to avoid excessive acid exposure. With precise acid selection and immersion timing, surface imperfections are expertly removed with minimal metal degradation. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse and often proceeds to an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
