What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated and essential metal surface cleaning process predominantly utilized after metal formation. This meticulous cleaning involves submerging the metal in a specially formulated acid bath known as pickling liquor. The type of acid in the pickling liquor varies depending on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the standard for most low alloy steels. For metals with heightened acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-step pickling approach might be required to thoroughly cleanse the surface and achieve impeccable cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process initiates with a preliminary rinse, effectively removing large dirt and debris particles from the metal surface. Following this, the metal is immersed into a pickling liquor bath where the acid meticulously dissolves impurities. The immersion is timed to perfection, ensuring the metal is withdrawn in time to avoid acid overexposure. With expertly chosen pickling liquor and precise immersion duration, surface imperfections are expertly eradicated with minimal metal loss.
