What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process that is widely implemented after metal formation. This highly effective method involves immersing the metal into an acid solution known as pickling liquor, which meticulously cleanses the surface. The choice of acid is crucial and varies with the metal: for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is employed. For metals that exhibit high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a comprehensive two-step pickling process is necessary to attain optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Pickling begins with a preliminary rinse to eliminate large particles and debris from the metal's surface. Once cleansed, the metal is submerged in a carefully prepared pickling liquor bath where the acid diligently removes impurities and refines the surface. Precise control of immersion time prevents overexposure to the acid and ensures effective removal of surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Afterward, the metal undergoes another rinsing step, followed by a vital oiling process to further protect and enhance the metal's surface integrity.
