What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized metal surface cleaning process, executed after metal formation to enhance surface quality. This intricate procedure involves immersing the metal into a pickling liquor, an acid bath tailored specifically for the metal type. Typically, for low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. However, for metals showcasing high acid resistance, a potent acid or a dual-phase pickling strategy may be deployed to ensure optimal cleanliness and surface integrity.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate large impurities and dirt particles. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in the meticulously prepared pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid acts to meticulously strip the metal surface of impurities, ensuring a pristine finish. Timing is crucial; once the optimal exposure period concludes, the metal is promptly withdrawn to prevent excessive acid interaction. When executed with precision, pickling not only cleans but also preserves the metal by minimizing loss. A final rinse is followed by a protective oiling, sealing the metal's cleaned surface.
