What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process commonly employed after metal formation. It meticulously purifies metal surfaces by immersing them into a solution known as pickling liquor, which contains a specific type of acid tailored to the metal's characteristics. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is used. However, when dealing with metals resistant to standard acids, a more robust acid or a two-step pickling process might be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness and surface integrity.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to clear the metal of large dirt particles and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is gently submerged into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid effectively removes surface impurities. By adhering to a precise immersion timeframe, overexposure is avoided, ensuring only surface contaminants are eliminated while preserving the metal's integrity. After the pickling phase, a final rinse is conducted, often followed by an oiling stage to enhance surface protection and finish.
