What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, often employed post-metal formation. This process involves immersing metal in a highly effective acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which is tailored to the type of metal being processed. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the standard choice. However, when dealing with metals that exhibit high acid resistance, it may be necessary to utilize a more potent acid or a two-step pickling method to achieve the optimal cleaning results desired.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, metals undergo a preliminary rinse to eliminate large particles of dirt and debris. Following this, they are submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid meticulously removes impurities from the surface. After a predetermined immersion time, the metal is carefully extracted to avoid overexposure to the acid, ensuring only minimal metal loss while achieving a flawless surface. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again and typically undergoes a process known as oiling, which further enhances its quality and longevity.

Examples include compressor shells, brackets, water heater liners, and chemical oil drums, showcasing the versatility and robustness of pickling steel.
