What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous metal surface cleaning process, prevalently employed after metal formation. This technique involves immersing the metal into an acid bath, known as pickling liquor, effectively cleansing the surface. The choice of acid within the pickling liquor is tailored to the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being a common choice for most low-alloy steels. For metals possessing high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a dual-step pickling process may be necessary to accomplish the optimal cleaning outcome.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to purge the metal of large dirt particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently purifies the surface by eradicating impurities. It's imperative to adhere to a designated immersion duration to avoid acid overexposure. By selecting the optimal pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, surface discontinuities are efficiently removed with minimal metal loss. After exiting the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage, ensuring a refined finish.
