What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface purification process, typically performed after the metal has been shaped. This meticulous technique involves immersing the metal into an acid bath known as the pickling liquor. The choice of acid in this solution varies depending on the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the acid of choice. For metals exhibiting higher resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a comprehensive two-step method might be required to achieve optimal cleaning efficiency.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process initiates with a thorough rinse to eliminate any significant dirt and debris from the metal surface. Next, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively removes surface impurities. The immersion time is crucial, and once the preset duration elapses, the metal is extracted to avoid excessive acid exposure. Using the correct acid and precise immersion time ensures effective cleaning with minimal metal depletion. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse followed by a process commonly referred to as oiling, to provide additional protection.
