What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated process designed to cleanse metal surfaces, most commonly after forming. The choice of acid varies, tailored to the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is employed. How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, metals undergo a thorough rinsing to eliminate initial dirt and debris. Following this, they are immersed in a specialized pickling liquor bath. The acidic solution acts efficiently, removing surface impurities to reveal pristine metal. Crucially, the immersion time is controlled to prevent excessive acid exposure. By selecting the ideal pickling liquor and maintaining accurate timing, surface imperfections are seamlessly eradicated with minimal metal wear. Post-pickling, a final rinse is performed, often succeeded by a critical oiling process to enhance protection.
