What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a vital metal surface cleaning process, essential after metal formation. It involves immersing the metal in a special acid known as pickling liquor to achieve a pristine state. The acid type varies with the metal; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is ideal. In cases of metals with high acid resistance, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling method may be employed to ensure the desired level of cleanliness is achieved.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse to eliminate dirt and debris. This pre-cleaned metal is then submerged in the pickling liquor bath, where the acid efficiently eradicates surface impurities. It's crucial to adhere to a specific immersion time to avoid overexposure. Using the right pickling liquor and precise timing ensures surface imperfections are minimized with negligible metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed once more and often undergoes a protective oiling process.
