What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized surface cleaning process designed to meticulously purify metals after their formation. This process involves bathing the metal in a potent acidic solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies with the metal type—typically hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-stage pickling method may be employed to achieve pristine cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to remove dirt and debris from the metal's surface. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid deftly eliminates surface impurities. The metal is removed after a precise immersion period to prevent excess acid exposure, ensuring that only surface imperfections are eradicated with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and is often treated with a protective oil coating to ensure longevity and resistance.
The Application of pickling steel
