What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a vital and meticulous metal surface cleansing process, predominantly utilized post-metal formation to ensure pristine surfaces. This method involves bathing the metal in a specialized acid, known as pickling liquor, tailored specifically to the type of metal being treated. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid serves as the primary agent, dissolving impurities with precision. However, for metals exhibiting high resistance to conventional acids, a more potent acid or an advanced two-step pickling process is employed to achieve immaculate cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process is initiated by a preliminary rinse, effectively eliminating significant dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid penetrates the metal surface, meticulously eradicating impurities. The metal is withdrawn at a precise moment to avert excessive acid exposure, thus ensuring minimal metal erosion and the removal of surface discontinuities. After withdrawal, the metal undergoes a final rinse and is typically treated with an oiling procedure to enhance its finish and protect its surface integrity.
